    Instructions on how to get your avatar animated.

    1. Make or find one to use.
    -Animated avatars are basically .gif files like the smilies. I made my gif by making several individual jpg pictures (via photoshop) and then made the animated gif with another software package (Ulead Gif Animator 5).  From what I've seen Ulead is a good program, but not the most powerful or advanced.  Please reply with your suggestions / reviews of other software packages.

    -There are many generic gifs on the web, with a little searching you might find something you like.
     
    Note:  The bbs' avatar space is 90x90 pixels.  Avatars larger then this size may not work and avatars smaller then 90x90 may be proportionally resized to fit the space.  If you find a Avatar larger then 90x90, most gif software packages should be able to resize it.


    2. Uploading your avatar.
    -The Upload Avatar space in your control panel will only work for pictures.  If you put a gif file in there, it will only appear as a picture of the first frame.

    -If your avatar is already on the web, the easiest way to set it as your avatar is to copy the URL, paste it into the "Avatar URL" space in your control panel and click update.

    -If your avatar is not on the web, and you don't have a space to host it then:
    (Your Avatar must be under 50KB for the following to work)
    ---Reply to this thread and use the Attachment tool to upload your avatar.  Remember, don't use the preview option when attaching images.
    ---Then right click on you attachment and click "copy link location"
    the link location should look like this (but with a different PostID number)

    ---Paste this into the Avatar URL spot and click "Save Changes" - Don't use the "update" button... and you should be good to go.

    Great guide! Only one thing to add: Make them as small as possible!

    It's like running an intro competition among the other hackers... after resizing & compression my avatar shrinked from 120kb to 20kb - so download speed is now 1/6! 120kb was way too much considering the fronpage of PeachyBBS is only 60kb (=text).

    Just noticed that it's very painly to open PeachyBBS with my laptop using my cellphone as a modem... and there must be some users using 56kbit modem here? Hopefully not too many.

    Personally I use Jasc Softwares Paint Shop Pro 7 which comes with Animation Shop 3. You can download the trial version here:

    As for avatars DeviantART has a good selection even though almost none of them are sexual.

    I've been trying to link to this animated .gif that I made and it's not working.   It's 80 x 80, and 62 kb.   I have it hosted on another website, what gives?
