If you're good with cameras and have ever run across videos from a site called POVD, the playback looks odd. I don't want to give a link because it's a video site.

All I know is that it's a head-mounted cam like a Go-Pro and there's zero grain... absolutely none. It's like watching a soap opera versus a high-end movie, but it's not the lighting that makes it look different. It's also not the fact that it's shot at a higher resolution.

Digitally shot at a really high frame rate? I have no idea.

One thing I noticed is that the depth of field is very small, which means that it was shot with a very large aperture camera, obviously not a typical head-mounted camera, which is little more than a webcam.  This gentleman is using a large lens, and very possibly, a high shutter-speed, and high frame-rate as well.  It probably uses on-board media, to avoid problems with the high frame rate.  I'm only guessing; I'm too chicken to actually join the site, and see a full-length feature.  You should be able to tell high frame-rate if the motion is smooth.

Thank you gentlemen.

I didn't see the first Hobbit movie (a trilogy... really?), but you reminded me that I read a lot of critical comments about how the high frame rate made it too real looking. Seeing the multitude of ways that critics were complaining about the same specific problem was fascinating, and a little hilarious.

Hi, gf. Too real?, cant please everyone. As i was falling asleep other night (2am) with radio on, this subject came up. only caught a little so further research needed. (sorry in advance). With the onset of high def tv and projection, a higher pixel rate is needed, known as the 'k' rate, this is higher than standard hi def, and in most tvs goes through a compression algorythm. And often gives a feeling of visual unease. Wish I'd heard the rest. Drum

Hey Drum. I just Googled "video that looks too real" and got a ton of info. Essentially, people are buying newer TVs and are baffled by the look of the video. It ends up being not just the camera or the high frame rate... the TV itself is playing a part, to the point where people have to mess with the settings to get the picture to look OK.

I was finally satisfied with movies when I got my first hi-def TV and a Blu-ray player... but that also meant I stopped reading up on the newer equipment. I'll leave out the latest jargon, technical terms and work-arounds. Instead, here are my picks for the best Blu-ray eye candy: Planet Earth (the David Attenborough version), 2001: A Space Odyssey and No Country for Old Men. Baraka and Samsara are stunning, but don't watch the extras. Everyone is so pretentious, it ruins subsequent viewings.

Hi, gf. Yep thats pretty much what was said. I'm sticking with a 23inch lcd and a 20 inch led. Too much hassle and expense to change.....and its only me and the cat watching. Drum
