Just read through those blogs, and i'm getting a little worried about
the standards of 'modern' education. Though the ten year old next
door gave me a fairly good explanation just now. Come on, its simple
physics......molecular structures vary between water and alcohol...so
they freeze at different rates...when you 'bang the bottle' it causes
rapid dispersion andcreates the 'crazed' effect.
Hmmm? wait three hours for cold beer?......nah !
Simple heat exchange (as practiced by army worldwide), dig shallow hole,
put cans or bottles in (lay on side), cover with 2inches of dry sand or
soil, pour petrol or meth over area and light....when flame goes out....
retrieve your cold drink......
Can do the same with a large tin can, and carbon tetra, but thats a bit
scary!

It's been a while since college but I'm pretty sure it has to do with the freezing point being lowered by compression, and then the sudden decompression of CO2 from the impact drawing heat from the water in order to decompress. We used to play that game in the frat house.  What Drum talks about is true but, IMHO, a bit different from this phenomena.

Any p-chems out there?
