It's very sad to hear about the problems, since the change from fixed width to 100% width was to satisfy both a) netbook and b) widescreen users. The times had changed since the original layout was designed. I for example, nowadays use only Asus eee 1024x768 netbook and 1920x1200 26" widescreen.
After the change everything scaled down nicely on my 1024x768 netbook and even to 800x600, which wasn't earlier possible. And on widescreen, I got to see more without 50% of the screen going to empty whitespace.
However, I'm now at work and notice some problems on Google Chrome and IE 6/5, so I've now changed back to original, fixed width -layout - which is best for old non-widescreen monitors with resolution above 1024x768. I'll make an alternative "theme" from the non-fixed layout so we can test it more.
