I've planning to make some 'eggnog' this Christmas... (never tasted it)

So, with doing some search I found these recipes:
http://www.8gv.com/christmas/recipes/eggnog.htm

I'm planning to go with this one:

6 Eggs
2 c Heavy cream
1 c Milk
3/4 c Sugar
1 tb Nutmeg
1/2 c Rum
1/2 c Brandy
1/2 c Whisky

...because if I remember right it should contain Rum, and other didn't. Hopefully I get it right with this one.

Just wondering if I can drink it right away... or keep it in the refrigerator for 2 days(like in some recipes)? Well, I'm not going to ask what it will taste like... with some luck it will taste like marinque.

Eggnog rules . Here is Emeril's (of *The Essence of Emeril* tv show) recipe . I never , ever doubt anything he makes since every recipe I have ever tried of his was greatness , and well....he is just cool . Kick it up a notch....BAM!!!! =)

8 large eggs, 2 separated
3/4 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups heavy cream
2 cups whole milk
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, plus more for garnish
3/4 cup bourbon
1/4 cup brandy

Combine the 6 whole eggs, 2 egg yolks, sugar, and salt in a medium mixing bowl and whisk together. Heat 2 cups heavy cream with the milk in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. When the cream and milk are hot, ladle about 1 cup into the egg mixture and whisk to incorporate. Pour the egg-milk mixture into the hot cream mixture, and continue to cook, stirring continuously, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the stove and strain the custard immediately through a fine-mesh sieve. Allow the custard to cool for 10 minutes before proceeding.
Add the vanilla, nutmeg, bourbon, and brandy to the eggnog and stir well to incorporate. Beat the 2 egg whites to soft peaks in a clean mixing bowl and fold them into the custard base. In a separate bowl, beat the remaining 1/2 cup cream to soft peaks, and fold it into the eggnog as well. Serve warm or cover and refrigerate until chilled, about 1 hour.
Pour into a decorative bowl or pitcher and garnish with nutmeg. Serve in small punch cups or old-fashioned glasses.

In Holland it's called "ADVOKAAT" (and generally is considered (in Holland) to be a ladies' drink...... (no offense Vatsis..) )

However, occassionally I  'eat'  i.s.o. drink it as well.

In Holland people are used to very thick and viscous Advokaat, sothat they spoon it from a glass i.s.o. drinking it. (with whipped cream (crème chantilly) ).

------------

Perhaps one of our German or Austrian friends can post a good recipy here for

GLÜHWEIN    ( a typical season's drink as well)

anybody ??

GLÜHWEIN

Ingredients

4 quarts dry red wine (zinfandel, merlot, burgundy, etc.)
1 pint brandy
1 cup sugar
6 cinnamon sticks
12 cloves, whole
1/8 tsp allspice
1/8 tsp mace
2 oranges, sliced
1 lemon, sliced

Directions

Pour the wine into a large pot and begin heating over low heat.
As it begins to warm, add sugar and spices. Stir until sugar is dissolved.
Add the brandy.
Heat thoroughly, but do not allow to boil!
Add the lemon and orange.
Steep for about 1 hour over low heat.
You may add more sugar during this time if desired, stirring well so it dissolves.
Serve hot and garnish with orange slices. A stick of cinnamon could also be used.

Welcome V....And Brood , Emeril generally refuses to endorse a certain product brand in his recipes because he doesn't want to alienate potential vendors and also because he is just that nice of guy . He uses and names brands on his shows because he has been using certain brands in some recipes for many years and I think he has endorsement deals with some of them and/or they are made in his home state of Louisiana (Crystal hot sauce) . If you have the cash , Funky made excellent choices , if you are more of a mid-range buyer but still want top quality I would recommend :

Makers Mark Bourbon

E&J V.S.O.P. Brandy

No offense but I find the smell and taste of Eggnog  repulsive. And like Dave Attel said  "Whoever came up with eggnog was like I wanna get little drunk but I also want some pancakes."

I'm suprised so many didn't like eggnog... I'll try anyways and tell here how do I like it.

btw. One VERY discusting tradiotal food in Finland is called Mämmi - it's made from plum but it tastes like just like it looks like. Augh!

Tried eggnog... not bad, but used a bit more vanilla and... ehem, milk cocoa. So what, it wasn't 'by the book' but it was drinkable (read: eatable).

I'll try now something compeletelly different: fresh orange cheese (cream bonjour), cocoa & coffee and cream... I'll make 'a christmas log' (French tradition) and some 'homemade Swedish beer' for Santa. He'll come in 12 hours...
