having IE7 auto-rename images when saving

Hi,

I stopped saving complete sets/galleries a while ago. It tends to get out of control if I do so.

Nowadays I only save an occasional pic that I like. I dump them all in the 'my images' folder and sort them out later.

I was wondering if there's an option in Internet Explorer 7 to automatically rename an image if I try to save it to the my pictures folder.

Often images are named '01.jpg' etc, and IE always asks if I want to overwrite or not. I always rename them manually by quickly typing some randum stuff and hitting enter. It would be cool if IE could do that automatically for me, to speed things up.

Does anyone know if there is such a function in IE7, or maybe a plugin? Thanks!

Try using a download manager, many will store downloaded files mimicking the file structure of the site, allowing you to easily retrace you steps and avoid duplicate names. My fav http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/ Q

Or you could do what I do with misc. pics...I put them in my misc. folder in my pictures. When you save a picture tell IE you wanna put it in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Pictures\Misc and name it what ever number or filename you like. I suggest a structure similar to my misc. filenames. Thumbs up!

I used to get frustrated with this alot as well, but I found a work-around that saves me a lot of headaches.

First, I downloaded 7-Zip. It's a free .zip file manager like WinZip, but it gives you the option of "Auto Rename" on files if it encounters duplicate filenames.

Next, being that I'm using Windows Vista, the OS defaults images to the "Pictures" folder anytime a picture is opened in a new window, essentially "forgetting" the last file path I was saving to. This was VERY frustrating, especially if a gallery opened each image in a new window. I created separate folders for each model that I liked, and kept the "Pictures" folder empty.

When I decided to start collecting pictures of a model, I'd save them all to the default "Pictures" folder. Then I'd use 7-Zip to add them all to a zip file, and then I would extract them all again into the folder made for the model. If it encountered any duplicate filenames, I would simply select "Auto Rename" and let 7-Zip rename the files.

I know it sounds like a pain, but believe me, it's the easiest work-around I've discovered yet. Once I've extracted the images into their destination folders, I simply delete everything in the "Pictures" folder, including the .zip files I've made.

The nice part about 7-Zip is that it works for .zip, .rar, and .cab files, making it a very versatile tool, and it's free.

I don't want to turn this into a long IE vs. Firefox (FF) thread, since it's meant to address a specific question. But since I use FF for most of my surfing, I've enjoyed the ease of DownThemAll! which allows for fast download and saving of a page (or part of a page, one pic or many) of pics to any folder of your choice. Just remember to have the file name extension settings the way you want the pic to be saved in your folder. (i.e. HotBabe22.jpg, not hotcelebbabes.org.HotBabe22.jpg) But if any of you can review and recommend a good download manager for IE, I might need it someday too, thanks.

Thanks for that link. Will this work with either browser?

BTW, have you tried it for DL flash videos? It says it can do that, too.

re-naming files by hand is a drag!!
whenever I need to do it, which is usually 3x a week, i use one of the tools of Arles
(basically a webpage making program)
alternatively, try jhead using command lines.. but take care, it overwrites yr files!!

 Thanks for the replies!

The renaming of files itself is not a problem. For renaming large groups of files I use File Renamer Ultra. Works quite well as you can pretty easyly use auto-numbering on a list of filess. I normally use Reget deluxe for downloading an entire gallery at once. Or sometimes I use ExpressWebPicters. With that program you can potentially download an entire site at once!

The ony problem I'm having is when browsing the net for pictures or small video previews and I try to save them, say in the My Images folder. Most pictures and also vids are named 01.jpg etc, and if your saving a bunch of random pictures during an internet session you'll end up with IE or FF asking if the file called 01.jpg should be overwritten. Which means that you will end up with having to type in a differentname for each pic that has the name of 01.jpg. It would be much easier if the browser would stop asking if I want to overwrite it but simply rename it automatically as 01(01.jpg or something like that.

Does anyone know if there is such a plugin or a setting for FIrefox that does that?? It would save a lot of time....

Thanks

With Firefox, DownThemAll! will rename other files automatically if you tell it to first, in the settings. For example, some people who don't rename their pics before posting on a forum page might have several Babe1.jpg. DTA can change it to Babe1_01 or similar, I forget the actual extension. It works great if you just want to suck up a bunch of pics in a hurry, and worry about actual file names later. (I'm using a slightly older version because it works better for me, long story.) Just remember to watch whether you're downing links, or embedded pics, or else you'll just grab the thumbs instead. You'll use one on pages with thumb links to full size pics, and you'll want to use embedded for pics that are already posted full sized. Another Firefox add-on I recommend is Build Gallery (or maybe BuildGallery, I forget) for getting pics that aren't direct .jpgs. It might be part of another program, I think BatchDownload

For pages with a lot of Imagevenue, Imageshack, Photobucket, or other well-known hosts, try this, it's fast!

 Thanks for the replies.

After starting this thread I switched to Firefox. I have been using it now for a while and I must say that it's much, much, much better than the horrible IE.

I also found the ultimate solution for my problem. It's the add-on called "Favloc" that works best for me.

 https://addons.mozilla.org/nl/firefox/addon/2140

What it does it that it allows you to set up a list with folders to which you can very easily save files from the net. After right-clicking on an image you are no more than2 clicks away from having saved your image in a specified folder, with the certainty of the image having a unique filename. --> If an image with the same filename allready exists the add-on will automatically rename the new image and store it, without you having to confirm anything!

 Best solution for porn-browsing ever!

Highly recommended!!!!
