MPEG Encoder Problems with Media Player 10

Everything was working fine before a Windows update yesterday afternoon.

I'm running Windows XP and use Windows Media Player 10. Since the update whenever I attempt to view/download a .mpg file I am given an error.

For instance, going to this page: http://www.ddstarlets.net/a/89f/index23.html and clicking one of the movies, I am given an error and redirected to the Windows solution page:

Solution Found: Contact MainConcept AG to Purchase Retail Product

Problem Description

Thank you for submitting an error report. The error was likely caused by MPEG Encoder.

Problem Resolution

MPEG Encoder was created by MainConcept AG. The demo version of MPEG Encoder that you are currently using is not supported by MainConcept AG. MainConcept AG recommends that you purchase the full retail version of MPEG Encoder for increased stability and product support.

To purchase the full retail version of MPEG Encoder, use the following steps:

  1. Go to the MainConcept AG website at http://www.mainconcept.com/downloads.shtml#anchor
  2. Find MPEG Encoder and then install it.

If you want to remove this program, please click here for instructions.

Additional Information

  • Microsoft did not create, nor does it provide technical support for MPEG Encoder.
  • If you have trouble installing the new software, or the problem you reported persists, please contact MainConcept AG.

If I download the trial version of MPEG Encoder from MainConcept, I still cannot play the movie.

Does anyone have any suggestions and has anyone had similar problems?

Thanks,
Tom K.

Strange... MPEGs can be played without additional software, so try to uninstall the MPEG Encoder. Whatever it is, you should not need it. If you can't, it will probably work with another player, like Media Player Classic.

Before your update, what did you use to view mpgs?  I wonder if the update messed up your file associations.

Can anyone advise tomk how (in XP) to change it so that WMP opens them?

Get Jet Audio (it's free) and be done with the bullshit of WMP altogether.

I hate WMP more than anything and this program has great reviews but it does not seem to recognize the cd/dvd/burner.  Having some problems getting the streaming video to load quick.  Once again thanks FT.

Instead of clicking the link directly, download it (right mouse button, save as ...) and then OPEN THE WMP and drag & drop the downloaded MPG file inside it.

And now ???????

you could look at the association for it. -

windows button and E. to launch explorer

Tools>Folder Options>File Types> and i suppose go to MPEG and look at the association, if you have Winamp you could change it to that.

you can do a system restore

or maybe download the codecs below.
