thanks for the good advice!

but inspite of all precautions it does happen every now and then. new spysoftware appearing all the time.

have good experiences with SpySweeper from http://www.webroot.com
it's updated regularly with new software definitions. Myself and people around me were shocked to see what this program found inspite of being on guard.

Dear scarface,

Thanks for the tips but just in case somebody reads this and decides to download the first spyware eradication software they come across, DON'T. There are a a lot of bogus and even counter productive spyware softwares floating around. Here is a list of some to avoid. I got this list from a forum called spyware warriors.

Updated list of fake spyware removers
The following programs are not recommended because they install spyware themselves, just aren't any good at fixing spyware, or somewhere in between.

AdProtector
AdwareHunter (adwarehunter.com/browser-page.com)
AdWareRemoverGold (adwareremovergold.com)
BPS Spyware & Adware Remover (bulletproofsoft.com) -- AdAware knockoff,
InternetAntiSpy (internetantispy.com)
NoAdware (noadware.net/netpalnow.com)
Online PC-Fix SpyFerret
PurityScan (purityscan.com/puritysweep.com)
Real AdWareRemoverGold (adwareremovergold.com/sg08.biz)
Spybouncer (spybouncer.com)
SpyAssault (spyassault.com)
SpyBan (spyban.net) -- noadware clone
SpyBlast (spyblast.com/advertising.com)
Spyblocs/eBlocs.com (eblocs.com)
SpyDeleter (spydeleter.com/209.50.251.182)
SpyEliminator (securetactics.com) -- dead?
SpyFerret (onlinepcfix.com) -- also Lop Uninstaller, Xupiter Uninstaller
SpyGone (spygone.com) -- SpyBot S&D ripoff
SpyHunter (enigmasoftwaregroup.com\spywareremove.com\spybot-spyware.com\
SpyKiller (spy-killer.com/maxionsoftware.com/spykiller.com/spykillerdownload.com/
SpyKillerPro (spykillerpro.com)
Spyware Annihilator (solidlabs.com)
SpywareBeGone (spywarebegone.com\freespywarescan.org)
SpywareCleaner (»www.checkforspyware.com/ - »www.spw2a.com/sc/)
SpywareCrusher (spywarecrusher.com)
SpywareInfoooo.com
SpywareKilla (spywarekilla.com)
SpywareNuker (spywarenuker.com/trekblue.com/trekdata.com/spyware-killer.com/
SpywareRemover (spy-ware-remover.com/spywareremover.com)
SpywareThis (spywarethis.com)
SpywareZapper (spywarezapper.com) -- looks like it may be TZ Spyware Adware Remover
SpyWiper (mailwiper.com)
ssppyy pro (ssppyy.com)
TZ Spyware Adware Remover (trackzapper.com)
VBouncer/AdDestroyer (spywarelabs.com/virtualbouncer.com)
Warnet (warnet.com)
XoftSpy (download-spybot.com/paretologic.com/downloadspybot.com/no-spybot.com) - this may be a SpyHunter clone
ZeroSpyware (zerospyware.com/zeroads.com)

Suspect
Spyware X Terminator

I kept running across a popup for a product called Spy Deleter. It was the most aggressive pop-up I had ever seen. There was no way I was going to give them $19.95 for their product. That would be like paying a mafia protection racket. I have since found that the people that did download this program had a real hassle cleaning up their computer afterwards. There is a case before the FTC concerning Spy Deleter and it's corporate owner, a Mr. Rob Martinson. I hope he fries.

Bull ,

Very good post and highly informative , your post will stop many from being duped and adding to their computer just what they intended to prevent And Scar's post as well .

I do have one disagreement though . BPS is a stand-up company and I really respect their software . Their ad/spyware program is very good . It combines a proven scanner , pop-up blocker (works ok but nothing beats Stopzilla®) and SpyWatch , which blocks most malware from getting into your computer . BulletProofSoft makes a whole line of highly regarded products . Sorry , had to clear that up Bull , because I really like that company and it's programs . *Note* there is a popular (but shitty) FTP server named BulletProof , but that is a different company owned by Digital Candle .

Dear Mr. Tard,

I didn't vet each of these, of course but Spyware Warrior seemed to be on top of it and also I knew for a fact they were right about Spy Deleter. I will try and find out what their beef was with BPS and get back to you.

well those r the main three u have (Y). spybot1.3 also has TeaTimer added. I think its ok, dont know what others make of it? Plus:
Mru-Blaster by javacool software which mainly cleans useage tracks. &
Spywareguard which runs in the background like spysweeper stopping adware etc from entering the PC

Hmmmm , that must be the newest version of BPS because I have multiple scanners and I never found anything they say is added (I have the 2003 shell and update the defs) and I sure as Hell wouldn't install anything that had what they say in it . Well I guess that company has gone south , with the legions of others . Sad , because I still think it is a useful product . I can't endorse a company that promotes and uses trickery , so BPS is now officially deleted . Again , great post Bull , hope it helps everyone alot .

Dear Mr. Tard,

Speaking of companies going south, what the hell happened to lycos. I remember a few years back it was one of the 3 or 4 search engines available. The others were yahoo and altavista. Now it is lycos sidesearch and is as bad as any adware/spyware out there. My spybot search and destroy found it a couple of times in my computer at work.

I just have to say to all of you great people "thanks"!

As an avid surfer for more than 10 years now, you would think that by now I would have at least one of the many good spyware killing programs you guys have suggested...but I don't . I've used adware for a while but nothing else. I guess my excuse is that my computer is almost as old as the amount of time I have been surfing. I really didn't care if it caught a virus or not. My stupidity..spybots are not a virus. After reading all of your threads, I went ahead and downloaded spybot and spyware blaster. You wouldn't even belive the ammount of shit my computer has picked up over the past 10 years or so. I cleaned all of the crap out and to my amazement I now surf the net about 30x's as fast! Thanks to all of you!

If you haven't any anti-spyware-software installed (maybe you don't believe you need this) you can scan your computer online with one of the best spyware-scanners for free and without registration!

http://www.pestscan.com/ScanOrTrial.asp

advantages :
+nothing to buy
+nothing to update
+scanning always with the newest definitions

disadvantages :
- - -no permanent scanner (guard) that prevents spyware coming on your computer
-IExplorer needed (tested with Opera - ActiveX-download failed)
- -no automatic removal of found pests

Excellent link, my scan picked up 14 tracking cookies that Ad-aware and Spybot 1.3 missed!

Hi all,

This is a more up to date listing of bogus software that supposedly gets rid of spyware. So now, from reading this thread, you will know the good ones from the bad ones.
