I've been busy lately, moving to my new appartment - got kicked out from previous one for studies not going well ...

...and noticed that my new cable is 256kbit/sec and costs 70$/month! Meaning, files download about 20kb/sec - and my old one (8Mbit/sec) had speed of over 1Mb/sec from Finland & Sweden (and was FREE for students like me).

So... just wanted to ask what kind of connection you have... any hardcore users (like me) willing to eat less for a faster connection?

ADSL Broadband 512 Kbit/s (Tiscali) €.24,- per month
(in Holland right now cut-throat competition going on amongst providers)

( €.1.00 = us$.1.20 )

Also ADSL Broadband 1 MB/s (Verizon) 35 $/mo

I just tested it, and was shocked when I got the 1 Mb/sec (slightly under 1MB when I retested). But then I noticed that the storage speed on my computer is only 123Kb/sec, yet another reason I need a new computer.

Cable @ 2994 kbps down , 384 up . $44.95 a month (including modem) . Here is the most accurate download and upload speed test I have found , at least for the USA .

I got dsl, on the test says 772 kpbs download and 330 upload. It's fine for me, all that for $30Can, so it's like $23-24 US and modem included, although I use my own with router that I got from AOL.

Using Ks test I get:
Communications 2.4 megabits per second
Storage 290.4 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 3.5 seconds
Subjective rating: Great

Ok, using FT's recommendation I get 726KB down, and 130KB up. But I still think my earlier one was more accurate as I was able to use a server near me (instead of going across country to a CA server).

I originally went here to test my speed.

Hmmmm..depends on where I'm at as to what I use...most of the time I use DSL

Communications 1.5 megabits per second
Storage 182.5 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 5.6 seconds
Subjective rating Good

It's not great but the cost is free so I can't complain! My best friend owns a chain hotel right next door to where I live and they have wireless dsl there. Since hardly anyone ever uses it and he still has to pay, he figures he might as well get the most out of it so he lets me "tap" into his system with a wireless router.

On the road, I use free Netzero or Juno 56k dial up....talk about slow!!

That particular site is known around the net as one of the least accurate tests available . . It is meant to be a general idea of your download speed and not a valuable guage . Many things can affect the results of a speed test , including how many hubs you go through to get to where the server is , the quality and speed of those hubs , and the amount of usage across the network at the time you test . They even state at the top of the test page that you will receive "higher accuracy" if you subscribe to the service for a fee . To add to all this , they have recently decreased the times a month that one IP can test at their site to a relatively worthless 3 . The server they use to test is located in Texas which will make a minimal difference compared to an accurate test server in California if you live , say , on the East Coast .

Yes I remember , and no way it's as slow as 25kbps . Since you're in Europe , I am not sure where there is a speed test that will test up and down . If anyone knows a good one , post it here . Otherwise , I will look for one . Stay Tuned!
