I stumbled the other day across an old book called "A Diversity of Puzzles" by E. R. Emmot. Lots of FUN!

See if you can solve this puzzle from that book:

Albert, Bert, Charlie, Douggie, Ernie, and Fred have their birthdays on consecutive days, but not necessarily in that order.

D's birthday is as many days before A's as it is after  F's.

C's birthday is as many days before F's as B's is after F's.

This year E's birthday is on Saturday.

On what day of the week do the birthdays of the other five men fall this year?

Simple addition

What are the digits behind the various letters?

A B L B  +  B G L B  =  L Z A A

The same letter stands for the same digit whenever it appears, and different letters stand for different digits.

Football Time!

By the end of the season, three football teams played each other once. the following score sheet was not completely filled and at the top of that there was one error scribed.

Team        Played        Won        Lost         Tied        Goals for        Goals against

A                                                                   1                                          0

                                                                  2               2                          3

C                                   1               1                                                          6

  • What was the mistake?
  • What was the score in each of the matches played?
  • Correct and Complete   the above Table.

X  T  M B
W H M W
T  T  M W
M X  M B
----------
B  B  B  B

In this formula, one, one letter is wrong. Which one? What should it be?
Substitute the correct digits for number.

I gotta get in on this, shhs ...

Within the Brainiac School, the science dept. has three disciplines. In total, 280 students study chemistry, 254 students study physics and 280 students study biology.
97 study both chemistry & physics, 138 study both physics & biology, 152 study both chemistry & biology. 73 study all 3 disciplines.

Can you determine how many students, in total, are enrolled in the science dept?

Correct with one letter missing.

Can you solve it with one letter wrong and none missing?

Calririfcation is needed.

The 280 chemistry, 254 physics, and 280 biology students. Does this sentence represent the total number of students who study those subjects respectively, or those students who are taking only that particular subject?

In case one has the right to use zero, I have another solution:

 XTMB
HHMW
TTMW
 MXMB
--------
  BBBB

In red the mistake, X=0, H=1, T=3, M=4, W=6 and B=6

     348
   1146
   3346
+ 4048
    -----
   8888

Brilliant! Another answer (given in Emmet's book):

W in column 1 should be T
2148 + 1346 + 1146 + 4248 = 8888
X= 2, T=1, M=4, B=8, W=6, H=3

the first sentence is the primer ... the second sentence gives final specifics for linking the depts. by enrollment.

hint > draw 3 circles that intersect (much like the Olympic symbol) with each circle representing one dept. and use the 2nd sentence to break things down where the depts. intersect.
