Steve Irwin died a few hours ago. Sad

RIP mate - you were a top bloke.

Mr Irwin, 44 died after the stingray barb went through his chest while he was shooting a documentary off Port Douglas.

Sad to see someone so passionate and enthusiatic about nature/life go like that. Very sad for his wife and young kids.

At least he died doing something he loved I guess. Not not make fun of his death, but always thought it would be a crocodile or snake to get him.

found this info posted on another forum, just some of the wildlife conservation work he's done that some may be unaware of...
(even has a newly discovered breed of turtle named after him)

In memory of his wonderful mother, Steve founded the Lyn Irwin Memorial Fund. All donations go directly to the Iron Bark Station Wildlife Rehabilitation Center with 3,450 acres of wildlife sanctuary. He also owns 83,000 acres of endangered Acacia Woodland in southwestern Queensland called Westbore and started the Brigalow Belt Conservation Project. That’s not all. Steve is buying up enormous portions of Australia for the sole purpose of conserving habitats for wildlife.

Steve Irwin is responsible for starting endangered species breeding programs for the Southern Cassowary, Koalas, Fijian Crested Iguanas, Bilby Rhinoceros Iguanas, Galapagos Giant Land Tortoises, Aldabran Giant Land Tortoises, Mary River Turtles, Peregrine Falcons, Komodo Dragons, and Irwins Turtles -- a newly-discovered breed named after Steve himself. He has also established breeding programs for such vulnerable species as Tasmanian Devils, Wombats, Echidnas, Red Kangaroos, Asian Small-Clawed Otters, Queensland Womas, Death Adders, Rusty Monitors, Canopy Goannas, Yakka Skinks, Reticulated Pythons, Burmese Pythons, Australian Green Pythons, Sea Snakes, Black Cockatoos, Jabirus, Curlews, and his beloved Saltwater Crocodiles.

Steve has helped fund field studies for scores of species of crocodilians, lizards, snakes, mammals, and birds in order to help stave off their habitat destruction and learn exactly what it is those species need to survive

I'd like to see how that happened (not the video, just a simulation or something).  I didn't know they could stab you, I thought they only stung you.  You know what I mean?

Fair bloody dinkum!! I can't believe he is gone.
I, and most Aussies liked the guy because of his attitudes, concerns and often silly humour!
He was endeared and revered around the globe because of his uniqueness and style.
This is such an unfortunate accident, as we all know he has subjected himself to many more dangerous
situations than this as h8sh8 mentioned, one would have expected a crocodile or snake to knock him off!

Yeah I'm curious myself. It's been in the news all day here, but haven't heard a lot about that side of except that the barb shot up (I think that's what they said??) and went into his chest and pierced his heart. They're saying it's a "freak accident" and sting ray experts are saying it's extremely rare, and would only happen if the sting ray felt it was in danger.

Also heard that it was going to be his last documentary too

- edit -
just found an article sort of explaining what the sting ray does - apparently it's like a scorpion type strike

A sad, sad loss... I found him both entertaining and a great educationalist...

He did a great job of promoting his homeland, and some of natures 'less cute' creatures - he has left a great legacy behind what with his abundance of nature programmes, conservation work and 'Australia Zoo'.

See the link to the BBC news item on him, which explains pretty well what happened to the poor guy.

Wouldn't surprise me if he were trying to wrestle it to the seabed then.

"Ohh, we got a beaut here"--then *BAM*, right in his heart.

(Please don't patronise me with obsequious mourning or pretensions of caring).

I read this on here late last night and I was shocked. What a tragedy. Like others have said around the net and on here, I always figured he would go out after being bit by a "world's deadliest" snake or making a wrong move with a huge croc. The way this went down is just bizarre.

My prayers and sympathy go out to Terri and little Bob and Bindi Sue. At least they will grow up knowing that their dad was a legend and a truly nice guy, and will never, ever be wanting for money.

Steve and Sui are back together forever. R.I.P.

this is some sad shit ... I preferred Steve to most of the other stuffed shirts simply because you knew he loved his life and it had meaning far beyond his immediate circle.

we're all gonna miss his antics but hopefully syndication will keep him in our living rooms for  while.

wow, what a week in Australia - confirmed about 5 mins ago that Aussie racing legend Peter Brock was killed in a car crash during a race in Western Australia. Don't know if he's known outside Australia, but he's been a household name here, and biggest name in Aussie racing, for decades - won Bathurst something like 9 times. Geez, WTF is happening this week? - two Aussie legends within days of each other.

RIP Brocky Sad

The UK Motor Sport magazine rated Peter Brock as among the top 20 most exciting drivers of all time.

I actually cried when I heard about this. I am huge fan of animals. Infact, I don't even eat meat. I haven't since I was 10. Steve was a great man and everyone knows this. I just feel even more sorry for his wife and children he left behind.
