mine seems to have dissappeared as well in the last 48 hours. Strange.

*Edit*: if I go to what's new, my dicussion box shows up. Bit of a hassle, but it could be worse.

Here's my 2-cents worth, the only slow loading portion of the homepage is the model thumbnails for each thread, not the convenient link to "My Discussions". Perhaps it would be better to focus your attention on this, and not removing one of the key features us members utilize on the homepage. I'm not suggesting all thumbnails for each post be removed within a thread, but perhaps only on the homepage.

How long before the newly acquired space on the hompage is consumed with an advertising banner???  Confused

Perhaps the "my discussion" box can be an option set in the profile, so members can turn it on, and visitors have it disabled.

Unfortunately that's not quite true. Actually the model thumbnails come from another server, which means our browsers can download the pics simultaniously... so they are as fast as they can be (with our current bandwidth provider).

I've done lot's of profiling and the real reasons are these two:

1) "My discussions" is a personalized information. => requires asking information from a seperate db. In addition takes some processor time to render html, that cannot be cached on server side memory/disk or user side. That is why it takes so long on the server before it can even be send to host. That info also explains, why anonymous users see Peachy18 faster then logged in -users; the pages come from cache.

2) The page size actually comes 1/3 larger with the right bar. That is a problem for people with modems, but not actually the real problem. The main problem is that all pages are Gzip:ed, meaning they are first encrypted server side, then decrypted on your browser side. Therefore the forums are fast for everybody and it doesn't require a good internet connection. Great, but the server side encryption requires lots of processing power for the reason (1) - much of the info is personalized and therefore the server needs to encrypt almost every page response. Otherwise we could just encrypt the cached version. Therefore the larger the original file size, the slower it will be for our server to send back you the host.

That is an excellent idea - haven't yet thought about it.

Actually it wouldn't even take to load at all, since the banner would be coming from another server and doesn't require using DB or personalization. Our servers could run at our current speed, needing only one more line of code.

Few thousand dollards could easily pay a one new server for PeachyForum. What would be nice, since we might want to have new features or just make the search faster. Meaning more posts and more users... and more forums.

However, it seems I cannot do that, at least yeat. Even optimizations made some people angry :) .There are still some people, that don't understand that everythiing done to PeachyForum - even ads - are for it's good in the long run... one day PeachyForum needs to make more money then it spends, or it doesn't have future if I decide to stop being an admin. That could happen, if I'll get fired from my daily job... we're living hard times.

my gray bar doesn't say "what's new."  As a matter of fact I can't find ANYTHING that says "what's new."  Where the heck is it?  I wanna find my discussions!

At top of each page just under the PeachyForum logo there's a grey bar with: Home  What's New  Favorites  Chats

Pse check again

If it's really not there with you, it might be browser-related.  In that case use:  http://peachyforum.com/blogview.aspx  and/or  http://peachyforum.com/forums/MyForums.aspx

"My discussions" is now back on the front page.

Hopefully it will handle the mass of new visitors we're expecting in the near few days...

I for one thank you for your efforts on our behalf. I know how you feel. My employer just announced they are planning on laying off 50-60 people. Now, I like to think I am indespensible. However, so does everyone else. Good luck, sir.
