This is the thread for all things metal. Post videos from video.google.com and youtube.com, song clips from band's websites, but no copyrighted material and no Rap**Share. List your current favorites, talk about why you like certain types of heavy music more than others....whatever. But don't try to come here and flame this kind of music and tell us why you think it sucks. Go listen to your Britney and Enrique cassettes on your stepmom's blaster, and leave us real people to our discussion.

I have always been into the extreme side of metal, my list would as-of-today look something like this (no order)

Dimmu Borgir
Cannibal Corpse
Aborted
Behemoth
Impaled Nazarene
Cryptopsy
Nile
Vital Remains
Hate Eternal
Decapitated

But I also like the more melodic metal bands sometimes too, like:

Strapping Young Lad (and anything Devin)
Symphony X
Arch Enemy
Children Of Bodom
Norther
Lamb Of God
Shadow's Fall
Lacuna Coil
Nevermore
Carnal Forge

Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face (Live)

Wow, Fucktard - I like heavy Rock and Metal, but I have to confess, I don't recognise one band you mention! Perhaps my definition of 'Metal' is lightweight compared with yours LOL! (actually, more likely I am stuck in a time warp as I listen to mainly 70's/80's). I will check-out the bands on your list and see what I'm missing!

Cool idea for a thread BTW...

Ahh yes! One of my favourite subjects...

The thing I love about extreme/underground/non-commercial metal is the diverse styles, from the really extreme gore/grind/death/black genres to the gothic/avant-garde/progressive. Certainly over the last couple of years the blending of styles has increased and bands are experimenting more and more.

Like it when bands evolve and try new things as long as it's what they want to do. I don't believe that bands should pander to record labels or even fans. Anyway here's a list of bands that I still buy, unless they've split of course.

The ones in bold are, according to my wife, the ones that she find really difficult to listen to.

Akercocke, Cathedral, Cephalic Carnage, Cradle of Filth, Crest of Darkness, Cryptopsy, Cult of Luna, Dark Tranquillity, Dillinger Escape Plan, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Gehenna, Goatsnake, Green Carnation, In Flames, In the Woods..., Isis, Katatonia, Madder Mortem, Mastodon, Kayo Dot/MOTW, Mayhem, My Dying Bride, Nasum, Nile, Old Man Gloom, Opeth, Pelican, Rotting Christ, Satyricon, Sigh, Thorns.

The lighter side:
27, Beyond Dawn, Cybele, Dismal Euphony, Elend, Fleurety, The Gathering, Nightwish, Pale Forest, Sirenia, Tristania, Sunseth Sphere, Tactile Gemma, Tenhi, The 3rd & the Mortal, Type O Negative, Ulver, Within Temptation.

Some of those have moved away from metal completely but their fanbase still consists mainly of metal fans.

A few places I like to visit:

Dillinger's current vocalist apparently took a dump on stage at the Reading festival and launched it into the crowd, such style.

Wasn't aware of that service before, thanks fucktard.

I am an old school headbanger really. I like very few new bands because 75% of them sound like they are possessed by the same demon that got Linda Blair's character in The Exorcist ! I guess what I am saying is I like hard n' heavy driving music with a screaming (falseto or tenor) voice instead of the demon-in-a-meatgrinder vocals.

Aahhhhhh.... Beavis & Buthead.....  whatever happened to them? I first saw 'them' when I was working over the pond in Charlotte, NC.. I was in my motel room, bored and 'channel hopping', as you do, and stumbled on to MTV to see B&B - I was hooked instantly! The show made it over to the UK about a year later, but not for long - shame! I hear MTV axed it because a couple of teenage dudes emulated some of the bad things they had seen B&B do in the 'toons - whether this is anecdotal I've know idea - off topic, I know, but perhaps some Peachy members Stateside may enlighten us?

MTV doesn't have room for B&B anymore with all their bullshit shows, but it still runs regularly on MTV2.

i remember the first time i saw beavis and butthead.  it was some hole in the wall town in colorado, at the, i shit you not, Hotel Colorado.  that place was spooky as hell.  i'm sure it was built on indian burial grounds, people murdered there, i mean blood gushed out of the elevator every time you pushed the button.  needleless to say, i have a large collection of b&b on the ol computation device, and mike judge has done well with office space and king of the hill.  yes, texas really does suck like that.  i know this isn't a b&b thread, so why is a television channel that never plays any music called music television?  oh btw iron maiden ....... faith no more.... does primus count?

Haven't seen MTV for about 12 years but I do remember when occasionally they would come up with a surprise. Especially when in the late 80's they suddenly aired videos from Napalm Death and Celtic Frost. Those are the two bands that got me interested in the brutality and in the case of CF the tinge of malevolent evil and experimentalism.

Unfortunately most of the other bands at that time didn't appeal to me and it wasn't until the corpse painted Norwegians crept from their forests leaving burning churches in their wake that I found anything else to enjoy. Not that I condone arson in any way. : ) That cold hearted feel, the guitar stylings and the mystery surrounding those bands really hit a nerve.

BTW drums that last bit you wrote about "the (family) group" has intrigued me. If you could elaborate on that I'll promise not to bother the local sheep anymore.

Toadpipe - you mention IRON MAIDEN - now that's a cool band! Who'd have thought Bruce Dickinson would have an alter ego as an airline pilot of all things! Imagine the thoughts running through the minds of some passengers if they knew who was piloting their plane LOL! He also did a cool series on Discovery channel where he showcased various aeroplanes... with the sort of flair and madness you might expect from a member of a rock band; this programme also featured occasional background musc from 'maiden - my idea of good TV!

Polish band Decapitated were mere teenagers when they released their debut album Winds of Creation. Now onto their 4th album they have a new singer which I'm personally happy with. Fantastic tech/death.

Here's a track from their 2002 album Nihility with original singer Sauron:

Drum - yeh - the chap must have felt quite sore about the turn of events in his life back then LOL!

Gemini37 - I saw 'maiden around that time - the 'Monsters of Rock' festival at Castle Donnington, UK (1984?). If I recall, 'maiden were the anchor band and paid for a huge firework display to end the concert. The whole event was awesome! Me and my mates drank far too much beer, ate dodgy burgers bought from the 'puke trucks' dotted around the event and after the event, ended up sleeping in the field. Woke up next morning stiff, cold, ringing ears, bleary eyed - aahhhhh... happy days!

Not strictly metal, I know, rather more like pure titanium...

Married and more 'domesticated' now, I don't escape much. However, me and a work mate did re-live our teenage years last year - saw Rush and Yes - both these bands could still rock a stadium with their sheer musicianship (and volume - man, what PA's those guys had), despite the advancing years of the band members! It was also nice to see that a fair proportion of the audience were teenagers, so I guess theses grand masters of rock of the '70/80's can still pull the crowds today...

Why can't 'floyd (lowers head in reverence....) get back together? What a tantalising glimpse we had last year when they did the last set at 'Live 8' Who knew that David Gilmour is 60 this year? He is bringing out an album called 'On an Island' - heard a track on radio today - promises to be good...

Sorry, Fucktard... off topic as a 'metal' subject, I know... Perhaps I should start an off-shoot thread to discuss such bands!

Nah it's fine....here is a quote directly from the prick David Gilmour. Still pissed at him for denying Roger Water's (who WAS the band) demands to not use the name Pink Floyd, and also for singing every song on that tour like the douchebag he is:

"The band? It's over. Reunited because of the good cause, to get over the bad relationship, and not to have regrets. I think I've had enough. I am 60. I don't want to work much anymore. It's an important part of my life, I have had enormous satisfactions, but now it's enough. It's much more comfortable to work on my own"

Fucktard - I hadn't seen/heard that quote, and in a naive way, I had hoped that past differences the band menbers suffered would have been 'put to bed' with that reunion. It's a shame they had to fall out - such a great band... I can't agree with you that Waters alone made 'Floyd - 'Floyd was very much the sum of all the band memebrs IMHO. Gilmour maybe thinks that the name 'Pink Floyd' should rest in the past and that The name 'Pink Floyd' used with Waters and new members wouldn't be the same (which it wouldn't) - who knows how he is thinking. Whatever you may think of Gilmour as a person, you can't deny he's an ace guitar player. I personally think Waters really came to light as a great musician when he produced his own work - 'Radio K.A.O.S.' is a great album and I still play it a lot now, and that came out 1987...
